Holland Park interviewed Hugo Nathan, Art Advisor, to find out how his education has influenced his career choice and success.

Job title and company: Director and Co-Founder of Beaumont Nathan Art Advisory Ltd

Education: Eton College, University of Edinburgh

How did your education inform your choice of career?

I studied Art History and Fine Art at Eton. In the school holidays, I did  work experience at Christies. I interned there during my gap year and then studied Art History at Edinburgh, all with a view to a career in the art world. After that, I immediately started upon my chosen career.

Did you find a particular teacher or person at your school or university especially inspirational?

Richard Thomsen at Edinburgh was a huge influence in driving my passion in the area of Post-Impressionism. Also, it was a great privilege to be taught by Elizabeth Cowling, still one of the top scholars in Modern Art.

What did your education give you that you are most grateful for?

The confidence to look at objects with an open mind and to think for myself, as well as the discipline to read up on the relevant scholarship before making my own opinions.

Sum up your education in three words:

Expensive but invaluable
